Prosthetic legs for both legs

When both legs are amputated there is no good leg to lean on, so balance has to be rebuilt from the beginning. We usually start with shorter legs that are easier to balance on, then raise them step by step as your confidence grows.

Why both legs is a different job

With one prosthetic leg, the other leg catches you when you lose balance. With two, there is no natural leg to fall back on, and you cannot feel the ground under either foot. That changes everything about the fitting: the sockets must be comfortable enough to wear all day, the feet must be stable rather than springy at first, and the training has to rebuild balance before speed.

The most common combination we see is both below the knee, usually after diabetes or vascular disease. We also fit one below and one above, and both above the knee, where shorter training legs make the biggest difference.

Short training legs, sometimes called stubbies, put your balance close to the ground while you learn.

Our usual plan for a pair of legs

  1. Healing and strength first. Wheelchair skills, transfers and exercises for the hips and trunk while the wounds heal.
  2. Training legs. Short legs with stable feet so you can stand and step between the parallel bars without fear.
  3. Raise the height in stages. As your balance improves, we lengthen the pylons over several visits.
  4. Final legs. Your own height, or slightly lower if you prefer, with the knees and feet that suit how you now walk.

Because there are two of everything, sockets and liners are made to the same standard on both sides. A comfortable socket matters twice as much here.

Questions about two prosthetic legs

Can a person with both legs amputated walk again?

Many can, especially when both amputations are below the knee. With one or both above the knee, walking is possible for fit, younger people, while many others use their legs for standing, transfers and short walks at home, and a wheelchair outdoors.

Why are my first prosthetic legs shorter than my old height?

Shorter legs bring your weight closer to the ground, which makes balance much easier while you learn. We increase the height in stages. Some people stay a little shorter than before because it feels safer, and that is fine.

Do both legs have to be fitted at the same time?

Not always. If one side heals first, we often fit that leg and train with a wheelchair or walker, then fit the second leg when it is ready.

What does a pair of below-knee legs cost?

A pair of affordable below-knee legs starts from Rs 160,000. Mixed or premium pairs cost more, and an above-knee pair starts from about Rs 320,000. You get a firm price after the assessment.
