Prosthetic feet, from SACH to carbon fibre
The foot is where the leg meets the ground, so it decides how tiring each step feels. A simple foot is tough and cheap; a carbon foot gives back energy. The right one depends on how far you walk, how much you weigh and what you wear on your feet.

What a prosthetic foot does
Your own foot absorbs the shock when your heel lands, rolls forward smoothly and then pushes you off into the next step. A prosthetic foot copies these jobs with its shape and materials. Cheaper feet do the first job well and the last one poorly. Better feet store energy as you roll over them and give some of it back.
Every foot is chosen for your weight and your activity level. A foot that is too stiff feels like walking on a plank; too soft, and it collapses under you. That is why we never fit a foot from a shelf without knowing who will walk on it.

The main kinds of foot
| Foot | How it works | Suits | Effect on price |
|---|---|---|---|
| SACH | Firm keel, soft heel, no moving parts | Short distances, one speed, tight budgets | Lowest |
| Single-axis | An ankle hinge lets the foot go flat quickly | Above-knee users who need stability | Low |
| Multi-axial | Moves in several directions on uneven ground | Rough ground, both-leg users, older walkers | Low to medium |
| Dynamic keel | Flexible keel rolls over and springs a little | Daily walking, work, travel | Medium |
| Carbon energy-return | Carbon springs store and return energy | Active users, long days, faster walking | High |
| Hydraulic ankle | Oil damping adapts to slopes and stairs | Active users who walk on slopes | High |

How we choose your foot
- Your weightEvery foot has a weight limit and a stiffness for your weight. Too soft or too stiff both cause problems.
- How far you walkA few hundred metres at home, or several kilometres at work, changes the right choice.
- Your shoesHeel height and style decide the foot shell and the alignment.
- WaterIf you need to get the foot wet for wudu or bathing, we choose a waterproof foot.

Prosthetic foot questions
What is a SACH foot?
SACH stands for solid ankle cushion heel. It has a firm keel inside a foam or rubber foot with a soft heel that squashes as you step. It has no moving parts, is very tough and cheap, and suits people who walk short distances at one speed.
Is a carbon fibre foot worth the extra cost?
If you walk a lot, yes. Carbon feet bend as you load them and spring back as you push off, so walking takes less effort and the step feels more natural. For short walks at home, a good dynamic foot or a SACH foot is usually enough.
Can I wear sandals with a prosthetic foot?
Many feet fit sandals, and some come with a split between the big toe and the rest for thong-style sandals. Heel height matters: a foot is set up for one heel height, so changing to a very different shoe changes how the leg stands.
Can a prosthetic foot get wet?
Some feet are fully waterproof, others are not. If you need to make wudu or shower with the leg on, tell us and we will choose a waterproof foot, or suggest a separate shower leg.
How do I know my prosthetic foot is wearing out?
Cracks in the foot shell, a heel that has gone flat, a new clicking sound or the leg leaning to one side are all signs. The cosmetic shell can usually be replaced on its own, which costs much less than a new foot.
